DESCRIPTION:
Massachusetts Shelf Clock, 8 day, weight driven, timepiece with alarm, c1815
CONDITION:
Well made mahogany and mahogany veneer case in very nice condition with a small veneer repair on the upper right corner on the base. The left bracket that supports movement seat board has been replaced. There is a small age crack in the left corner of the dial door. Finial is very old and could be original. Both scroll tips have been repaired. Original painted iron dial is very nice with some slight lifting of the paint near 5 o'clock. Hands are original. Banjo type movement with a step train recoil escapement movement. The alarm movement was riveted to the existing movement using iron plates with a brass escape wheel driving a verge with a hammer to strike a bell on the top of the hood. The alarm may have been made after the movement was completed as the maker could have incorporated the sidearm in the making of the plates. Ht 34.25"
